S2 Rated Digital Safe installed in Hertfordshire

A Compact S2 Safe for the Stairs Cupboard
Our customer in St Albans wanted a compact digital safe for household valuables, but also wanted it tucked away somewhere discreet rather than taking up space in a bedroom or study. After looking at the available positions, we recommended the Burton Safes Torino S2 Size 2E Digital Safe and the cupboard beneath the stairs as the best location.
The Torino Size 2E is independently attack tested and certified to EN14450 S2 and carries recommended insurance ratings of £4,000 for cash and £40,000 for valuables. At 35.5kg with 31 litres of internal storage, it is a useful size for a cupboard installation without being unnecessarily bulky.
Raising the Safe Above the Cupboard Lip
The main complication with this installation was not the wall behind the safe, but the raised bottom edge at the front of the cupboard. If we had simply placed the safe straight onto the cupboard floor, the safe door would have caught on the lip and would not have been able to open fully.
To solve that, we used two 25mm MDF packers beneath the safe, creating a 50mm raised platform. It is a small detail, but exactly the sort of thing that makes the difference between a safe that technically fits and one that is actually convenient to use every day. Once raised, the door cleared the cupboard edge properly and could swing open without obstruction.
Four Wall Anchors and Four Coach Screws
With the height sorted, our installer could concentrate on the fixings. All four of the safe's rear fixing holes were used, with four heavy-duty expanding anchor bolts securing the safe directly to the wall behind the cupboard.
The safe was also secured through its four base fixing holes using four coach screws, through the two MDF packers and into the wood floor beneath them to maintain the required clearance. Using both the rear and base fixing points kept the safe firmly located while preserving the carefully set door height.
A Neat Fit and a Door That Opens Properly
Once everything had been tightened and checked, the safe sat neatly within the stairs cupboard with the keypad easy to reach and, importantly, the door opening fully above the cupboard lip. The two MDF spacers are largely hidden once the safe is in position, but they are doing an important job underneath.
The customer was shown how to programme and operate the digital keypad, and how to use the emergency override keys and external battery features if they should ever be needed. Our installer then cleaned the work area and gave the customer their certificate of installation before leaving.

The Burton Safes Torino S2 Size 2E provides 31 litres of internal storage, one removable shelf and recommended insurance ratings of £4,000 for cash and £40,000 for valuables.
Cupboard installations sometimes need a little more planning than they first appear to, particularly where doors, skirting, shelves or raised edges affect access. We can discuss these details before installation and work out the most practical position and fixing method.
About St Albans, Hertfordshire AL1
St Albans is one of Hertfordshire's most historic cities, growing from the important Roman settlement of Verulamium. The Roman town developed close to Watling Street and became one of the largest urban centres in Roman Britain.
The city takes its modern name from Saint Alban, traditionally regarded as Britain's first Christian martyr. A monastery dedicated to him was established in the Saxon period, and the later medieval abbey developed into the landmark now known as St Albans Cathedral.
Much of the city's long history remains visible today around Verulamium Park, the Roman theatre, the medieval street pattern and the surviving Abbey Gateway. The historic centre also includes the Clock Tower and a long-established market tradition.
The arrival and expansion of the railway helped St Albans grow as a popular commuter city. Today Thameslink services provide direct connections towards central London, while the Abbey Line links St Albans with Watford.
The AL1 postcode covers much of central and eastern St Albans, combining historic streets, established residential neighbourhoods, parks, schools, shops and convenient access to the wider Hertfordshire road network.
