Burton Security Acquired by Associated Security Solutions

Burton Security Acquired by Associated Security Solutions

Two of the best-known names in the UK safe and physical security industry have come together following the acquisition of Burton Security by Associated Security Solutions.

The deal was publicly announced in April 2025, with Associated Security Solutions describing the acquisition as bringing together two long-established British physical security businesses with complementary experience in safes, vaults, security doors, ATM protection and other high-security products.

Behind the announcement is a significant development within the UK safe industry, bringing Burton's well-established safe and security business into a much larger group with its own manufacturing facilities, national engineering network and a history stretching back more than 80 years.

The acquisition actually took place earlier in April 2025

Although the acquisition was publicly announced towards the end of April, Companies House records indicate that the change of control took effect on 4 April 2025.

Burton Security forms part of Trusted Security Group Limited, and Companies House records show that Associated Security Services Holdings Limited became the controlling party of Trusted Security Group from that date.

The records show Associated Security Services Holdings with ownership of more than 75% of the shares and voting rights in Trusted Security Group, together with the right to appoint or remove directors.

There was also a major change to the management of Burton Security itself. Associated Security directors Roy Turner and Stephen John Turner were appointed directors of Burton Security on 4 April 2025, while a number of the company's existing directors left their positions on the same date.

This therefore appears to have been more than the straightforward acquisition of the Burton Safes name. Associated acquired control of the wider Trusted Security Group, which sits above several related security businesses.

These include Burton Security Limited, Burton Safes Service Limited, Safe & Vault Company Limited, Keyguard Security Ltd and Kirkstall Safes Limited.

From a Yorkshire garage to one of Britain's best-known safe suppliers

For anyone who has worked in the UK safe or locksmith industry for any length of time, Burton is a very familiar name.

The company can trace its history back to 1990, when Norman Berry started Burton Safes in West Yorkshire.

It was a considerably smaller operation in those days. Berry initially sold safes to locksmiths and churches from his garage and personally delivered them to customers. Burton later recalled that those early deliveries were made from the back of a Volvo estate.

From those modest beginnings, the company grew into one of the UK's largest suppliers of domestic and commercial safes to the locksmith and security trade.

As the company expanded, so did its product range.

Burton became known not only for conventional domestic and commercial safes but also for higher-security safes, strongrooms, security doors and access-control products, together with specialist and bespoke physical security solutions.

The business also developed an international presence, with Burton products and security solutions supplied outside the UK into parts of Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia.

Over time, the Burton business broadened considerably beyond the traditional image of a safe distributor.

This was reflected in September 2022 when Burton Safes Limited officially changed its name to Burton Security Limited. The Burton Safes name remained strongly associated with the company's safe products, but the new company name better reflected the much wider security business that had developed around it.

Associated Security has an even longer history

Associated Security Solutions has an equally interesting background.

The company traces its origins back to Manchester in 1945, when John Stanley Sproston began trading as J. S. Sproston.

Originally operating as a locksmith, the business gradually developed relationships with commercial customers, banks and government organisations and subsequently moved into the supply and installation of safes.

John Sproston's nephew Roy Turner joined the company in 1952, followed by Roy's sons Stephen and Roy in 1979. The Turner family continued the expansion of the business and remains closely involved with the company today.

Acquisition has played a significant part in Associated Security's growth.

Over the years the company has acquired a number of familiar names within the British security industry, including Ken Durose in 1991, T O'Connor Security Services in 2002, Adamant Lock & Safe in 2006, SMP Security in 2013 and Safes International in 2015.

More recent additions include Validator Safes in 2022, Bethcore Doors in 2024 and now Burton Security in 2025.

It has consequently developed into a substantial physical-security organisation covering everything from individual safes through to vaults, strongrooms, cash-management equipment, security doors and large bespoke installations.

Why does the Burton acquisition make sense?

From an industry perspective, there is considerable overlap between the two companies, but there are also important areas where their respective operations complement one another.

Associated Security has built a sizeable national engineering and service infrastructure alongside its manufacturing operations.

Burton, meanwhile, has developed a particularly strong position in the UK safe trade, together with expertise in certified safes, bespoke secure storage, ATM protection, security doors and specialist physical-security projects.

In announcing the acquisition, Associated said the combined businesses would provide a wider portfolio of high-security solutions, improved nationwide customer support, greater capability for bespoke and certified secure storage and continued investment in British manufacturing.

This potentially creates a group capable of handling almost every stage of a physical-security project — from product development and manufacturing through to delivery, installation, servicing and ongoing maintenance.

Burton Security remains a recognisable business

Importantly, the acquisition has not meant the disappearance of the Burton name.

Burton Security continues to operate as an active company and Burton products remain present in the safe and security marketplace.

There have nevertheless been some visible corporate changes following the acquisition.

Burton Security's registered office was moved in May 2025 from its previous Huddersfield address to Security House, 25 Addington Street, Manchester, the headquarters associated with the Associated Security group.

The Burton identity, however, continues to be used within the enlarged organisation.

That distinction is important. This does not currently appear to be a case of an established safe manufacturer or supplier simply disappearing following an acquisition. Instead, Burton has become another specialist business within a much larger physical-security group.

Further consolidation within the British safe industry

The acquisition is also interesting when viewed against the wider changes that have taken place within the UK safe industry.

Safe manufacturing and distribution has historically consisted of a mixture of large manufacturers, family businesses, specialist importers and relatively small independent companies.

Over recent decades, many of those businesses have changed ownership, merged, been acquired or disappeared altogether.

Associated Security itself provides a good example of this consolidation. Many formerly independent businesses now sit within the wider Associated group, while their expertise, manufacturing capability or product ranges have been incorporated into a much larger national organisation.

Burton Security is one of the most significant additions yet.

Associated now describes its history as progressing from a Manchester locksmith business established in 1945 to a national physical-security organisation, with the Burton Security acquisition forming the latest major stage of that expansion.

What does the acquisition mean for Burton Safes customers?

For customers buying a Burton safe, the most noticeable point is probably that the Burton name continues.

The acquisition potentially gives Burton access to the wider resources of Associated Security, including manufacturing, engineering, logistics, service and maintenance capabilities across the UK.

Associated described the transaction as combining the experience and product ranges of both businesses rather than simply replacing one brand with another.

For the safe industry, however, the significance is greater.

Burton grew from a small Yorkshire business supplying safes from a garage into one of Britain's best-known names in safe distribution and physical security. Associated Security developed from a Manchester locksmith established shortly after the Second World War into one of the country's largest physical-security groups.

The acquisition brings those two histories together.

No purchase price has been publicly disclosed, and we have seen no official information suggesting the acquisition resulted from financial problems at Burton Security. What is clear from the public records is that control of Trusted Security Group changed on 4 April 2025 and that Burton Security has continued trading as part of the enlarged Associated Security organisation.

For an industry that has seen considerable change in recent years, this is another important development — but, in this case, one in which a familiar British safe name continues under new ownership rather than disappearing altogether.
