Dudley Safes Ceases Trading After 44 Years of British Safe Manufacturing

29 September 2026

London & Home Counties Safes has learned that Dudley Safes has ceased trading, bringing to an end 44 years of British safe manufacturing.

Established in 1982, Dudley Safes grew from a small family business into one of the best-known British manufacturers of security safes, cash safes, deposit safes, underfloor safes, wall safes and security cabinets.

For those of us who have worked in the UK safe industry for many years, this is particularly sad news. Dudley Safes was not simply another brand of imported safes. It was a genuine British manufacturer, producing safes at its premises in the West Midlands and employing skilled people involved in the manufacture and supply of physical security products.

Dudley Safes – 1982 to 2026

Dudley Safes Limited was incorporated on 16 July 1982 and was founded by brothers Mike and Jeff Macefield.

The company remained a family-run business and operated from Deepdale Works in Upper Gornal, Dudley. Dudley described itself as one of the relatively small number of remaining UK manufacturers making what it called “real safes”, rather than simply importing finished products from overseas.

Over the following four decades, the Dudley name became familiar throughout the UK security industry.

Its products could be found in homes, offices, shops, commercial premises and financial environments across the country.

The range was considerably broader than many consumers may realise and included:

  • Eurograde security safes
  • cash safes
  • deposit safes
  • office safes
  • fire safes
  • underfloor safes
  • wall safes
  • security cabinets
  • media safes
  • vehicle safes
  • bespoke security products

The company was particularly well known for its ability to manufacture bespoke products for commercial customers rather than being restricted entirely to standard catalogue sizes. Its published company information also highlighted its UK manufacturing operation and network of engineers and installers.

A British safe manufacturer disappears

The loss of Dudley Safes is significant because genuine safe manufacturing in Britain has become increasingly unusual.

Dudley manufactured in the West Midlands and produced a range of independently tested Eurograde safes. Its manufacturing credentials included ISO 9001 quality certification, and its graded safe ranges were submitted for testing through recognised certification systems.

For safe companies such as ourselves, Dudley has been a familiar name for decades.

Many Dudley safes are substantial pieces of engineering which will undoubtedly remain in use in shops, businesses and private homes for many years to come.

Very sad news for everyone at Dudley Safes

This is very sad news for the British safe and security industry.

A company does not manufacture safes in Britain for more than four decades without a considerable amount of knowledge, experience and specialist skill being built up amongst the people working there.

We would therefore like to wish the Macefield family, the management, employees and everyone associated with Dudley Safes the very best for the future.

We would also like to acknowledge the enormous amount of work that has gone into building and maintaining the Dudley Safes name since 1982.

For many people within our industry, Dudley Safes has simply always been there, which makes the news of its closure particularly poignant.

The end of an era for Dudley Safes

Dudley Safes grew from a family company established in 1982 into a manufacturer whose products were installed throughout Britain.

Its safes will remain in service for many years, and the Dudley name will remain very familiar to safe engineers, locksmiths, security companies and customers across the country.

For those of us who have known the company and its products through many years in the safe industry, Dudley Safes 1982–2026 really does represent the end of an era.

We wish everyone connected with the company well for the future.
